Mary Lee Callaghan

Mary Lee Callaghan, age 89, passed away on May 26, 2016 at Vassar Brothers Hospital with family and friends at her bedside.

She was born on March 24, 1927 in Saranac Lake, NY, a daughter of Leah Muncil Meagher and Cornelius Meagher. A graduate of Albany Business College, Mary worked as a legal secretary for the law firm of McCormick and LaPan in Saranac Lake for many years. On July 20, 1963, Mary married Lawrence Callaghan. He predeceased her in 1997.

A beloved mother, Mary is survived by her son Kevin Callaghan and the children of Lawrence: Thomas (Peggy) Callaghan, Charles (Kim) Callaghan, Margaret Petrone, and Barbara Darrah along with many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She is also survived by her nephews Richard (Patricia) Meagher and Neil Meagher.

Mary was predeceased by her twin sister Helen Meagher, her brother Neil Meagher, and Lawrence’s son William Callaghan.

Prior to suffering a debilitating stroke, Mary was a member of St, Martin DePorres Parish and also attended Mass at St. Mary’s Parish in Poughkeepsie. She was a devoted Roman Catholic.

The family wishes to thank Mary’s wonderful caregivers who brought her joy and comfort in spite of her health issues: her granddaughter Anastasia Callaghan, certified nurse’s aide Shakima Parker, and most especially her devoted nurse Maria Spranzman who was like a daughter to Mary and treated her with exceptional love and kindness.

Calling hours are at the Michael Torsone Memorial Funeral home in Poughkeepsie on June 1 from 6:00-8:00 PM. Additional calling hours are being held on Thursday, June 2 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral home in Saranac Lake, NY from 5:00-8:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial is being celebrated at 10:00 AM on Friday, June 3 at the Church of the Assumption in Gabriels, NY.
