Eric T. Merrill

June 8, 1970 — June 12, 2026

Vermontville

Eric T. Merrill, known as “Pugsley” to many and lovingly as “Uncle P” to his nieces and nephew, passed away peacefully on June 12, 2026, surrounded by his family. Born June 8, 1970.

To know Eric was to laugh. He had a gift for making people smile, whether he had known someone for years or had just met them. In fact, it often didn’t take more than a single conversation before you became his friend and before long, he had probably given you a nickname that somehow stuck. Eric never met a stranger. His larger-than-life personality, quick wit, and endless sense of humor drew people to him everywhere he went. If you spent even a few minutes with him, chances are you left with a story to tell, a new nickname, and a smile on your face.

While Eric was known for his humor, those closest to him knew his greatest gift was his heart. He fiercely loved his family and treasured the countless friendships he built throughout his life. His circle of friends seemed endless, a reflection of the genuine kindness, loyalty, and warmth he shared with everyone around him. He was always willing to lend a hand, share his knowledge, or simply be there when someone needed him.

Eric found his greatest peace and happiness outdoors. Whether he was hunting, spending time in the woods, riding his buggy, watching the deer that wandered through his yard, or simply enjoying nature, the outdoors was where he felt most at home. He loved sharing that passion with others, especially his nieces and nephew, whom he affectionately referred to as his “Rugrats.”

To them, Uncle P was much more than an uncle. He was a mentor, teacher, protector, and friend. He taught them how to hunt, how to drive, how to lend a hand when someone needed it, and how to find humor in just about every situation. Through countless adventures, stories, and life lessons, he created memories they will carry with them forever. His Rugrats knew they were deeply loved, and they will forever cherish the time they spent with their beloved Uncle P.

Though his passing leaves an immeasurable void, the impact Eric made on the lives of so many will endure. His laughter, shenanigans, generosity, loyalty, and love will continue to live on in the family and friends who were fortunate enough to know him.

Eric is survived by his loving parents, Bradley and Kathleen Merrill; his sister and brother and law, John and Robin (Bundy) Gay; his nieces, Katie, Madie, Emily, and nephew Andrew, affectionately known as his “Rugrats,” and a Great nephew on the way, he was excited to be a Great Uncle P. ; as well as countless aunts, uncles, cousins, dear friends, and all those fortunate enough to have been touched by his friendship and generosity.

Eric’s life was not measured by years, but by the countless lives he touched, the friendships he built, the nicknames he handed out, the lessons he shared, and the love he gave so freely. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved.

As family and friends gather to remember him, they can take comfort in knowing that the stories, laughter, and memories he created will continue to be shared for generations. The world is a little quieter without Pugsley in it, but it is undeniably better because he was here.
