Kenneth Garwood

Kenneth P. Garwood, 87, of 45 Cedar St., Saranac Lake, died Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2009 at home, surrounded by family.

Born in Saranac Lake on Nov. 29, 1921, he was the son of Arthur and Hazel (Parks) Garwood. He married Gwen (Sellner) Garwood on Sept. 20, 1946.

Ken graduated from Saranac Lake High School in 1939 and worked at Wilson’s Clothing before joining the Army Air Corps in Oct. 1942. He was attached to the 8th Air Force in England, serving as radio operator and gunner on a B-17 bomber. Ken achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant and received the Air Medal for bravery. He was shot down twice: first on his maiden combat mission over the English Channel, and again on June 20, 1944, over Germany. Ken landed safely, but was captured and spent over 10 months as a prisoner of war.

After World War II, Ken returned to Saranac Lake, working at Scheefer’s Jewelry for almost 60 years and serving on the Village Board of Trustees for over a decade. As a trustee, Ken played an integral role in securing the T-Bar lift at Mt. Pisgah Ski Area and was one of the first people to ride it to the top. In addition, he was active in the Saranac Lake Chamber of Commerce, the Elks and Rotary Clubs, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the American Legion, and served as a coach and officer in local youth baseball leagues. Ken also enjoyed golf and bowling, playing in a league at Saranac Lanes with his wife Gwen for several years.

He is survived by his wife Gwen; six children: John Garwood, of Pittsfield, Mass., Linda Schalm and her husband Dick of Saranac Lake, Kenneth Garwood and his wife Mary of Canton, Dianne Hallaway and her husband Bob of Chester, Conn., Lisa Leonidas and her husband Phil of Saranac Lake, Joel Garwood and his wife Susan of Saranac Lake; his faithful dog, Cookie; his sister, Alice Munn of Saranac Lake; 15 grandchildren, great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and his brother, John Garwood of Saranac Lake.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. There will be no calling hours or funeral service.
