Lawrence Dewey “Larry” Gowett, Jr, age 84, of Ilion, NY. formerly of Saranac Lake, NY died Monday January 10, 2022 at his residence.

Larry was born in Saranac Lake, NY on March 24, 1937 the son of Lawrence D. Gowett, Sr. and Clara (Haskins) Gowett.

Lawrence was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the Korean Conflict and in Lebanon. Following his military service, Larry became Chief of Police in Brewster, MN. He had been a voltage lineman for Niagara Mohawk Power Corp and later was a Police Officer for Gulfport, FL. Police Department. Larry was an electrician in the Saranac Lake area for a number of years, and became an electric lineman foreman for the municipality of Frankfort, NY. Larry was also a high voltage lineman for Mesa, AZ and a high voltage electrician at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY. Larry finished out his career as an electrician/electronics technician for Rome Research at Griffiss AFB retiring in 1997.

Larry enjoyed retirement by doing the things he loved which included fishing, hunting, camping, handiwork, equipment maintenance and repair, reading, music and watching television.

Larry is survived by his Daughter Cathleen (Donnie) Burkhead of Claremore, OK., one son, James Gowett of Brandonton, FL., his grandchildren: Marshelle Watson of Chelsea, OK., Marcus Burkhead of Tulsa, OK, Michael and Matthew Burkhead of Claremore, OK and his great grandchildren: Kylie Watson of Claremore, OK, Thaddius “TJ” Burkhead, Cynthia “Allie” Burkhead-Cobb and Kaden Watson all of Chelsea, OK. Larry is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Larry was preceded in death by his father and mother, two sisters: Eleanor Diliberto and Betty Amell.

Funeral Arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. Calling hours will be held on Thursday January 20, 2022 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at the Funeral Home with a Prayer service at 6:00pm with Kelly Haig officiating. For those unable to attend, the calling hours and prayer service will be live streamed via the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home facebook page. Burial will be held in the Spring in the family lot in Pine Ridge Cemetery with military honors. All in person attendees are required to wear a face mask no matter your vaccination status.
