Nicholas Mitchell

August 11, 1925 — October 16, 2016

Nicholas Mitchell, 91, formerly of 11 Kiwassa Road, Saranac Lake, died Sunday, October 16, 2016, at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin, Vermont. He passed away peacefully surrounded by his five children.

Nicholas, son of Nicholas Mitchell, Sr., and Mary Vivian Mitchell, was born in Augusta, Georgia on August 11, 1925, and raised in Albany, NY.

He graduated Milne High School in 1943 and went on to serve his country proudly during World War II in the U. S. Army in the European theater during the second wave at Omaha Beach. He drove a tank in General Patton’s army and received a Purple Heart after being shot by a German sniper. He finished his service in Europe working with Explosive Ordinance Disposal.

Following the war, Nick attended Paul Smith’s College with the first graduating class of 1948. On July 30, 1949, he married the love of his life, Kathleen (Kay) Carson, at St. Bernard’s Church. She predeceased him in 2000. He worked briefly for the FBI and then the U. S. Postal Service for 37 years retiring in 1986 as Postmaster in Ray Brook.

Nick was a member of the Elks Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, and the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his five children: Deborah Khan of Montpelier, VT (Arif); Pamela Mitchell of Bend, OR; Barbara Mitchell of Clifton, VA; MaryAnne Wollman of Mechanicsville, VA (Charlie); and Mark Micieli of Bristow, VA (Jina Carey); nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake. A funeral mass will be held at St. Bernard’s Church on Wednesday, October 19, 2016, at 2:30 PM. There will be a graveside service at St. Bernard’s Cemetery for family and close friends.
