Alfred E. Smith
Alfred was born December 18, 1932 in Tupper Lake, the son of William J. and Della Smith. He is survived by Jacqueline Powers Smith, his loving wife and friend of 55 years, a daughter Ellen Guiney and husband Richard and a daughter Vivian Smith all of Tupper Lake as well as six grandchildren, Lindsey Fletcher and husband Matt of St. Augustine FL, Tiffany Person of Daytona Beach FL, James Person and Kara Matthews of Tupper Lake, Brandon McArdle, attending Union College of Schenectady NY, Nicholas O’Neill of Tupper Lake, Aimee Guiney of Phoenix AZ, one great granddaughter Madison Fletcher of St.Augustine FL, one sister Sadie Amoriell of Tupper Lake and one brother Paul of Adams Center NY.
Alfred was predeceased by his mother Della and his father William Smith, five brothers, William, Norman, Edward, Leon, and Robert, and 2 sisters, Hilda Kenniston and Olive Platt.
He attended grade school at Holy Ghost Academy and graduated from Tupper Lake High School in 1951, earning honors in Football, Basketball, Track and Golf. He was inducted into the Tupper Lake High School Hall of Fame in 1989 for his records in Track and All Northern Team Sections in Football and Basketball. He also received first team selection to the All Central Football Team. He was again inducted into the High School Hall of fame for being a member of the 1948 undefeated football team.
He married Jacqueline Powers of Tupper Lake on December 14, 1952 at the Great Lake Naval training center in Waukegan, Illinois. Alfred served with the sixth fleet in the United States Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Lindenwald LSD6 for four years, attaining the rank of Machinist Mate 1st class. He was honorably discharged on January 12, 1956.
Alfred enlisted in the New York State Police on May 19, 1956 in Malone, NY. He completed his original basic training at the Old Police School in Troy with assignment to Troop B. Alfred served in various capacities throughout Northern NY including Malone, Tupper Lake, Saranac Lake, Crown Point, Port Henry, Schroon Lake, Elizabethtown, Plattsburgh, Keeseville, Inlet, Long Lake and Indian Lake. He served as Zone 2 Station Commander Sgt. at Saranac Lake. In October 1972 he was promoted to BCI Lieutenant in charge of the State and Interstate Narcotic investigations, with offices on Wards Island and the World Trade Center in New York City. In 1974 Alfred returned to Troop B to assume command of zone 3 of Troop B in Canton New York. In 1976 Alfred assumed command of Zone 4 of Troop B with headquarters in Ray Brook, New York. In 1978 Alfred, was promoted to the rank of Captain and transferred to Troop E headquarters in Canandaigua, NY as Assistant Troop commander in the Finger Lakes region of NYS. Alfred worked that area until he had the opportunity to return home to Troop B Headquarters where he remained as Captain until his retirement in June 1987.
There will be no calling hours. A funeral mass will be held at St.Alphonsus Church in Tupper Lake NY on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 11:00am. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery with full military honors. Donations may be made in Memory of Alfred to High Peaks Hospice. Arrangements are with the Stuart-Fortune-Keough Funeral home in Tupper Lake.
