Claire Tarantelli

June 13, 1924 — July 16, 2009

Claire Yarter Tarantelli passed away on Thursday June 16, 2009, after a difficult and painful struggle with metastatic bone cancer.

Claire was born in Hudson Falls, New York, on June 13, 1924. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1941. She then attended Nazareth College, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1945.

After college, Claire taught Middle School English for four years in Dansville, NY, before moving back to Hudson Falls and taking a position with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Glens Falls.

In 1949, she married Samuel Louis Tarantelli. Together, they had two children. Claire resumed her teaching career at St. Alphonsus School in Glens Falls where she taught kindergarten and first grade for approximately nine years.

Later in life, Claire became a primary caregiver and devoted nearly all of her time to the care of her Aunt, Blanche Yarter, and her husband, Sam. In 2006, she moved to Saranac Lake to be in closer proximity to her children and grandchildren.

Claire found enjoyment in the simple things in life. As a child, she loved swimming and fishing the canals of Hudson Falls with her Dad. As an adult, she spent as much time as she could in the frigid waters of Lake George. She was an excellent cook, avid reader, and great bridge player.

Claire is predeceased by her husband, Sam, and her parents, Clifford Yarter and Katherine Rhode Yarter.

Claire is survived by her son, Michael Tarantelli, his wife Linda Cook Tarantelli, grandchildren Max and Dana Tarantelli, and step grandchildren Matt Cook and Jessica Cook Zobel. She is also survived by her daughter, Mary Ellen Stumpf, and granddaughter Casey Claire Skrhak and her step grandchildren Andrew, Katrina and John Skrhak, III.

Calling hours will be held from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Sunday July 19, 2009 at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home in Saranac Lake, NY.

In lieu of flowers, friends and family may make a donation, in care of the funeral home, to High Peaks Hospice or the Salvation Army, Claire’s favorite charity. Family and friends can also share their memories and sign the online guestbook at fortunekeoughfuneralhome.com.
