Irene D. Walker, age 98, of Saranac Lake, died Wednesday, April 22, 2009 at Adirondack Medical Center of Saranac Lake.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland on October 03, 1910, she was the daughter of John and Cora (Porter) Lang. She married Kenneth Walker on May 13, 1939 in Baltimore, MD. He predeceased her on February 7, 1976.
Mrs. Walker had been a resident of Saranac Lake since 1956 coming from Okinawa where her husband was stationed in the U.S. Army. She had been employed as a switch board operator for the New York Telephone Company for many years until her retirement. Prior to that she had worked for Paul Smith's Telephone Company and Paul Smith's College in the cafeteria for several years. Mrs. Walker was a charter member of the Saranac Lake Adult Center and was one of the original board members. She was very active in Girl Scouts as a Troup Leader for many years and was also a very active member of the First United Methodist Church in Saranac Lake. She also enjoyed gardening.
She is survived by one son Arthur Walker and his wife Sandra of Saranac Lake, NY, one daughter Irene Walker of Saranac Lake, NY, four grandchildren Jason Walker of Old Bridge, NJ, Rachel Walker of Saranac Lake, NY, Richard Reyor of Washington, DC, and Christian Scarborgh of Sanford, NC, and several nieces and nephews including Cora Stone of Ferndale, MD. She was preceded in death by one brother Franklin and two sisters Elizabeth and Evelyn.
Calling hours will take place at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home on Monday, April 27, 2009 from 1PM - 3PM. A memorial service will immediately follow at 3:00 P.M. at the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home, Inc., with Rev. Susan Kenna officiating. Interment will follow in Pine Ridge Cemetery.
